Assignment 1: Research Area
For this assignment you’ll write a short (2-page) paper describing faculty research in an area of your choosing. First pick an area, then do a cursory search on our department website of faculty doing research in that area. There might be just one faculty, or perhaps several. Your job is to summarize research these faculty do in that area in your paper. Here are some things you could talk about:
- where does their research fit within the broader scope of the area? That is, what is their specialization?
- how long have they been doing research in this area?
- what are some things you think are particularly interesting about this research?
- what open problems are they tackling currently? What are the associated challenges?
- what kinds of tools do they use in their research?
- how big is their lab? what do their graduate students focus on?
Ideally you’d actually reach out to professors in this area (e.g., during their office hours) to have a discussion with them, though I won’t require this.
